김정은 위원장과 문재인 대통령, 인사로 시작하는 남북정상회담

 

Leaders take part in highly choreographed opening to three days of talks in Pyongyang, North Korea

두 정상, 북한 평양에서 있을 3일간의 회담에 앞서 정교하게 구성된 서막에 모습을 드러내다

 

Kim Jong-un has greeted the South Korean president to cheers from crowds assembled at North Korea’s Pyongyang airport as the pair begin their third summit.

김정은 북한 국무위원장은 북한 주민들이 결집한 가운데 평양의 공항에서 문재인 대한민국 대통령을 맞이하며, 두 정상의 세 번째 회담이 시작되었다.

 

The North Korean leader emerged from the airport building to raucous cheering and walked up to President Moon Jae-in. The two leaders embraced and flashed wide smiles.

김 위원장은 공항 건물에서부터 환호성이 들리는 곳을 따라 문재인 대통령을 향해 걸어갔다. 두 정상은 포옹을 하고 환하게 웃었다.

 

The highly choreographed meeting – set to dramatic music provided by a military band – opened a three-day summit in Pyongyang between the leaders of the two Koreas. Moon is hoping to mediate an impasse between the United states and the North over the latter’s nuclear weapons programme.

군 음악대의 장황한 음악 등 정교하게 연출된 이 만남으로 삼 일간 있을 평양에서의 회담이 열렸다. 문 대통령은 최근 핵무기 시설을 둘러싸고 교착 상태에 빠진 미국과 북한과의 관계에 중재 역할을 하길 바라고 있다.

 

Kim is likely looking for greater economic cooperation with the South and seeking sanctions relief as well as a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean war, which ended in an armistice.

김 위원장은 1950-53년에 있었던 한국전쟁을 공식적으로 종식하고 대치 상태를 끝내서 한국과의 경제 협력과 대북제재 완화를 기대하고 있는 것으로 보인다.

 

Kim was accompanied at the airport by his wife, Ri Sol-ju, and his sister and close adviser Kim Yo-jong. Moon and Kim Jong-un also reviewed a North Korean honour guard of soldiers before a loudly cheering crowd of North Korean men in dark suits and women wearing hanbok – Korean national dress. They hoisted North Korean flags, flowers and flags depicting a unified Korean peninsula in blue against a white background.

김 위원장은 부인 이설주 여사와 공항에 동행했다. 문 대통령과 김 위원장은 북한 명예의장대의 의장 행사를 관람한 데 이어 어두운 양복을 입은 남성과 전통 의상인 한복을 입은 여성으로 구성된 주민 환영단이 이들을 맞았다. 환영단은 북한 국기와 꽃, 흰 바탕에 파란색으로 한반도를 묘사한 한반도기를 흔들었다.

 

The crowd appeared bored as they waited but then seemed almost hysterical at the sight of Kim. The entire ceremony lasted about 15 minutes before Moon and Kim drove off in a caravan of black cars and the crowd quickly returned to its previously calm state.

기다리면서 짐짓 지루해 보이던 환영단은 김 위원장을 보자 거의 흥분한 듯했다. 전체 환영 행사는 15분 정도 진행된 후 문 대통령과 김 위원장은 검정색 차를 타고 떠나자 환영단은 다시 원래대로 조용해졌다.

 

As the pair drove through the streets of Pyongyang, well-dressed crowds lined the roads and shouted their desire for unification as Moon and Kim waved from the top of a black limousine. The trip is the first visit by a South Korean president in 11 years.

두 정상이 차를 타고 평양 시내를 지나며, 잘 차려입은 주민들이 길가에서 통일을 염원하는 함성을 향해 검정 리무진 위에서 손을 흔들었다. 대한민국 대통령의 이번 평양 방문은 11년 만에 처음이다.

 

They later arrived at a guesthouse in Pyongyang where they were expected to have talks over lunch. Kim and Moon arrived at the Paekhwawon State Guesthouse in a black Mercedes convertible and were seen talking and adjusting their hair before stepping out of the backseat.

이후 두 정상은 오찬을 함께 할 것으로 보이는 게스트하우스에 도착했다. 김 위원장과 문 대통령은 검정 메르세데스 오픈카를 타고 백화원 국가 게스트하우스에 도착해, 뒷좌석에서 내리기 전에 이야기를 나누고 머리를 정리한 것으로 보인다.

 

North Korea’s nuclear programme is at the top of Moon’s agenda as he tries to get Kim to provide details on his previous commitment to the “complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula”. Negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington have stalled since Kim met Donald Trump in Singapore in June, with Kim only offering vague pronouncements and little substance.

김 위원장에게 “한반도 비핵화”에 대한 이전 공약의 세부 사항을 전달하려는 문 대통령에게 있어서 북한 핵 시설은 최우선 의제이다. 지난 6월 김 위원장과 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 싱가포르에서 만난 이후 김 위원장의 애매한 발표와 소극적 행동으로 평양-워싱턴 간 협상은 교착상태에 머물러있다.
